My love affair with extensions began years ago, and I’ve adored them since. Going longer can be a pretty big step and quite a commitment: the results are dependent on the type of extensions and the system used to apply them. But with a silly amount of choice out there, how do you figure out what’s right for you?
Pre-bonded / Fusion bonds These are attached to the hair via little keratin bonds at the tip of the extension which are fused with a little hot tool. These are extremely popular and look great, but require significant upkeep. As well as that, you need to avoid putting conditioners, oils or heated appliances near the connection, as these things will weaken the bond and possibly lead to your extensions coming out much earlier than they should. Hair Type: These extensions are generally the most discreet, they can be applied to most hair types and are ideal for fine/thin / coarse hair. A few years back fusion hair extensions was applied with a regular "hair glue." Later a new bond formed from keratin was developed. Since your hair shaft is made out of 90% keratin this is a more healthy, less damaging option for applying fusion extensions. For maximum longevity with this system, remember to condition only the lengths. If you’re blow-drying, dry the lengths first, then tip your head forward to dry your real hair--don’t blast the bonds with heat! Durability: 3 months, but if you look after them well by yourself you could get 4 or 5 months out of them! I've gone this long in the past. Micro-Bead/Micro-Ring A hugely popular system, and the one I’ve most recently had applied. They’re pretty much damage-free as there’s no glue, no heat, no tape and no sewing. Hair Type: Not suitable for those who have extremely greasy hair as the rings can slip, Really tight curly hair would become matted or those with very thin/ fine hair would not benefit from this application as the bonds would be more visible. A single-strand micro-bead extensions by clamping the little bead on the tip of the extension to your own hair. The connections are durable but not uncomfortable (after few days) Durability: 3 to 4 months with regular maintenance 4-6 weeks. after this hair can be removed and reapplied with new beads! Blondie Locks This method is very similar to micro ring but the links used are a lot smaller, lie flat and more discreet that micro rings. They can last 12 weeks before maintenance! No Heat, No Glue, Tiny, discreet and comfortable links, Re usable hair, Quick, safe application. Hair type: any This involves threading a small copper link on to a section of your hair, an extension is placed inside and then it is clamped shut. This method does not involve the use of heat, glue, chemicals or braiding.. This method is completely non damaging to your natural hair and it is also the most discreet method available. Shrink links / Shrinkies The shrinkies hair extensions is a strand-by-strand hair addition technique. The Shrink-Link is threaded onto your natural hair with a looping technique. A pre-bonded strand of extension hair is then placed inside the tube along with your natural hair and then using a special heat clamp the Shrink link is then heat activated and shrinks around them both. When the heat is applied to the shrinkie, the keratin fuses with the extension and natural hair creating a bond. The tubing shrinks down and protects this bond. Shrinkies are a durable and long lasting hair extension method. Those who dye their hair often may benefit from this application as they are more durable against chemicals and can withstand water effectively. Durability: Reviews around the internet typically lean on the fact that this method is not as durable as the pre-bonded method. An install typically lasts from 3-4 months In caring for your extensions, just use common-sense: these things are attached to your head via a type of bond, and the hair weighs on this bond. Don’t pull on them or snag them when washing or brushing, and avoiding weighing them down with too much conditioner or products. Always blow-dry them to avoid tangle. See our Aftercare page Problems can arise: if you find your extensions feel extremely tight or uncomfortable and it’s been over a week since you got them, go and see your technician to figure out what adjustments they can make. Too-tight extensions can cause traction alopecia or sores on the scalp and neck, so if things don’t feel right it’s best to get them checked out quickly. We only use high quality, double drawn hair.
